Periodically
the UK Government, and presumably those of the other major powers,
assess the risks of nuclear attack on the country. Part of this is a
classified report by the Joint
Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC is an inter-agency
deliberative body responsible for intelligence assessment,
coordination and oversight of the Secret
Intelligence Service (SIS, better known as MI6), Security
Service (better known as MI5), GCHQ
(formerly known as Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS), or
Government Communications Headquarters), and Defence
Intelligence. The JIC is supported by the Joint
Intelligence Organisation under the Cabinet
Office, and meets primarily at 70, Whitehall.
The map and list are from the 1968 report on the likely targets for
Soviet attack in the UK. The most recent report available is that of 1972.
